Samsung Takes on Apple; Releases Revamped Gear S2 Smartwatch

BENGALURU: Samsung Electronics is making a strong comeback in the wearable technology market with its new release Gear S2 smartwatch, reports Bloomberg.

Samsung introduced two versions; the new device will run in the company’s Tizen operating system. Samsung didn’t release any apps for the Gear S2 and the new watch will allow for mobile payments, smart car keys and remote control of home devices.

Google Inc. last year introduced an Android operating system as a software solution for wearable manufacturers. Apple Inc. sold 3.6 million watches in the second quarter, making it to the top provider of smart wearable devices after just one quarter of sales and Fitbit Inc. dominates the basic wearable market with 4.4 million units sold in the second quarter.

The new Samsung watch features a 1.2-inch circular screen with a thickness of 11.4 millimeters. It includes ‘at-a-glance’ notifications for e-mail, calendars, and news and lets users to send text messages from their smart watch.
