iPhone Popularity Is Dying In Asian Cities

Bangalore: Here is a short scene to describe the situation: a normal day in an average college cafeteria, 7 friends come down from class to grab a bite. They get a sandwich each and a smoothie to go and the gang grabs a seat on one of the tables. Cool girl takes out her iPhone and starts texting her boyfriend, the one next to her gets a text on her phone and takes out her HTC One X, then a Samsung Note comes out followed by a Sony Xperia, LG Nexus 4, Motorola Droid Razr and even a Micromax comes out of the pocket. One of them says ‘Hey look there is a party at sangeet’s house this evening. It’s really far.’ She names the place and everyone check their maps on their phones. Cool girl with iPhone asks, ‘I can’t locate the place, where is it?’

One of her friends asks her, ‘are you using apple maps?’

‘Yeah’

‘Hmmm, makes sense. Here take a look.’

Cybermedia Research (CMR), in its latest report titled, India Mobile Handsets Market Review, 2Q 2012, has shared that from January to June 2012, shipments of mobile handsets were found to be 102.43 million units. The total India shipments of Smartphones were found to be 5.50 million units for that period in which the leading Smartphone OS was Android (56.4%). With the arrival and colonization of Android, Apple’s iPhone is slowly losing its grip on the Asian market.

The Android is cheaper, has newer apps developed by Google, and has more variety of handsets to choose from than Apple’s iPhone. iPhone is no longer the phone that people look at and wish that they ‘had one of those,’ because they have a slick alternative, on the contrary they have many alternatives to choose from. iPhone in Asia is now the exclusive phone for Apple loyalists that is gradually losing its exclusivity or is simply being overrun by its competitor – Android. It is not the case in the U.S. but Asia lies in a different part of the globe where simply brand name is not enough for its customers to stick with the company.
