World's Biggest Cyber Attack Causes Global Internet Slowdown
Bangalore: The world has been experiencing slowed down internet with disruptions in popular service sites like films and TV, along with usual delays in loading websites. This has been happening around the world as what experts have described as ‘a row between a spam fighting group and hosting firm’, blocking spam.
The problem however began by a nonprofit company Spamhaus aiming to help in blocking unwanted junk emails and blacklisting a Dutch company in this month.
Cyberbunker is a hosting firm, allowing organizations to make their websites openly accessible providing space on a server.
According to the company’s website, it will host anything except for child porn and content related to terrorism.
Spamhaus keeps a record of the data bases of web servers which are known to be used for malicious purposes, such as sending spam mails for bogus products like fake weight loss pills.
According to Spamhaus, Cyberbunker has launched a huge ‘denial of service’ (DDoS) attack flooding servers with internet traffic, just like jamming a mail box with hundreds of letters at the same time.
Chief executive of Spamhaus, Steve Linford told BBC that the scale of attack was powerful enough to bring down the Government’s computer system. He also added that the attacks are peaking at 300gbps. However he denied disclosing the details as those involved could also come under attack.
He added that several other companies like Google had made their resources available to help absorb the excess traffic.
