With Adults On Facebook, It Is Not A Fun Anymore: Teens

Bangalore: Michael McQueen, an author and social media expert from Australia says teens are leaving Facebook in favor of other social networking websites such as Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat, courtesy of the "Levi’s Effect". "Levi jeans were a cool, young brand - until parents started wearing them - and the same thing has happened with Facebook." Mr McQueen said, reports Sydney Morning Herald.

Last year, Facebook was the primary social networking website for millions of teens across the globe, but not anymore. Twitter has snatched the pole position from Facebook this year. Only 23 percent of teenagers now use Facebook as their main social networking source, according to an Australian study. Today, teens log-off as they are put off by their parents who are logging-in. Folks from older generation who signed up in 2010 were solely using Facebook to spy on their kids and monitor their activities, but now, they are beginning to catch the Facebook bug and are actually using the popular site as a means of reconnecting with their old pals. This does not seem to sit very well with the teens.

Sue Gleave, an Australian entrepreneur and parent of the 19 year old Holly, joined Facebook before her daughter. "She spends more time on Facebook than I do." Holly said. Gleave has 350 friends and 42 Facebook pages related to her tourism business Stays in the Vines. Gleave joined Facebook in 2006 because she wanted to stay in touch with all her friends and also because it helped her with marketing her business. The latter is something that is very common these days; Facebook has become a marketing platform for many businesses, big and small.
