Twitter and Facebook Building Their own Search Engines


Bangalore: Google seems to be facing a dose of its own pill with several alternative search engines sprouting out around the web. Google’s journey through troubled waters might just scale up on its troubles with the social networking giants like Facebook and Twitter trying to sneak into this over crowded battle ground of search engines.

Twitter’s take on Social Search

 The San Francisco based micro-blogging site is said to be trying its chance in search engine market. What it brings into the game is a good amount of recognition and customer base along with the huge pile of database connecting all the social objects online. “Twitter has been slowly transforming itself into a post-Google information company. In past few weeks alone it has unveiled expandable tweets, hashtag-based pages and other similar innovations,” reports Gigaom. Twitter has been working towards building its team for the search engine market as well. It recently hired John Wang, the well known engineer from LinkedIn who has in the search engine business for a long time. Ruslan Belkin was also added to the team as Director of Engineering, Search and Relevance. Working towards search dominance Twitter has also improvised on its internal search by adding related queries and spelling suggestions.

The company is re-imagining the concept of search and is working towards the new function called ‘Discover’. The function is mostly aimed towards making the future of search less textual with help of touch centric and voice recognition enable devices to be launched.
