Top 10 Finalists Revealed For Google Impact Challenge

Bangalore: The first Google Impact Challenge was launched in India in August 2013, inviting Indian nonprofit organizations to propose how they would make India and the world a better place using technology. On October 21, the top 10 finalists were revealed, four of which will each be awarded 3 crore, Global Impact Award and mentoring from Google to deliver on their project.

The 10 finalists and a brief overview of their project goals, which tackle problems ranging from rural education to agricultural development to sanitation, can be found below:

1. Agastya: Launched a network of motorbike science labs to address the lack of science equipment and digital resources for rural children.

2. Breakthrough: Launched a data-driven digital toolkit to enable anyone to launch an effective campaign to reduce gender-based violence.

3. Chintan Environmental Research & Action Group: Develops an online marketplace and integrated mobile app to organize waste pickers and address the growing problem of trash in Delhi.

4. Digital Green: Scaled a video hub and an online knowledge platform to help farmers gain the agricultural skills they need to lower their costs and increase their productivity.

5. Going to School Fund: Creats open source mobile games to teach critical entrepreneurship skills to India’s children.

6. Janaagraha Centre for Citizenship & Democracy: Creates online and mobile apps to connect citizens to their government representatives in urban India.

7. Pratham Books: Builds a collaborative, open platform that lets people share, translate and create children’s e-books to provide kids with easy access to language-appropriate reading materials.

8. Prayas Energy Group: Deploys a network of real-time sensors to monitor power supply provided by utility companies and improve power distribution quality in India.

9. Shelter Associates: Conducts digital mapping of urban slums to identify service gaps and inform better infrastructure planning and sanitation development.

10. Social Awareness, Newer Alternatives: Combines solar-powered micro-ionizing water purification and bio digesting technology to improve water and sanitation infrastructure for rural villages.

A panel of VIP judges will hear pitches live from all 10 finalists and select three additional 3 crore Global Impact Awards. The judges include:

1) Google board member Ram Shriram.

2) Google Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora.

3) Google Director of Giving Jacquelline Fuller.

4) Social Worker and former Chairperson Thermax’s Anu Aga and

5) Omidyar Network India Advisors Managing Director Jayant Sinha.
