The Interesting Connection Between BlackBerry 10 and Kerala Student Entrepreneurs

Bangalore: BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, begin its comeback bid adding a dash of spice to attract younger audience. The company which was well-known for its Smartphones long used by the professional class will unveil its latest phones on Wednesday, which will feature applications developed by 57 companies residing within Kochi’s Startup Village, an incubation centre supported by the Indian government, reported TOI.

Nearly 150 apps on the Blackberry platform have been developed by the students employed by these companies. The apps ranges from algorithms for guessing the user’s mood to those that help start and accelerate a car.

Blackberry is trying to compete in the market with the larger rivals Apple and Samsung and the apps could reveal a makeover for the mobile maker. Until recently, Blackberry offered about 1, 05,000 apps compared with 7, 00,000 for Android phones and 7, 75,000 for Apple.

In order to bring out more apps alike the rivals, RIM turned to sourcing innovation from new locations. Kerala was chosen as its destination in Asia-Pacific last year.

"We found the Kerala Start-up Village to be excellent in garnering college support, and providing land, legal and financial assistance to student entrepreneurs," said Annie Mathew, director alliances and business development at RIM India.
