The Godfathers of Internet


Bangalore: Internet Society’s first ever “Internet Hall of Fame” intends to "Publicly recognize a distinguished and select group of visionaries, leaders and luminaries who have made significant contributions to the development and advancement of the global Internet."

In its first ever list, Internet Society recognizes a total of 33 visionaries who gave “life” to the internet and made it as we see today. Without these people’s work, internet would have never been born or grown to this extent over the decades. Our generation would have never known Facebook or an Email.

The inductees include innovators like Ray Tomlinson, who invented Email to Tim Berners Lee, who created the World Wide Web.

Ray Tomlinson

Inventions: Email, “@” symbol

Tomlinson invented and implemented the first Email system in ARPANET, which is considered to be the predecessor of internet. He is the one who choose “@” sign which seperates the user from machine and which has been used in billions of Email addresses ever since. He and his Email software SNDMSG played a main role in developing the Email standards.
