The Dhobi Goes Digital With The Country's First Laundry App

BANGALORE: In a bid to bring the traditional industry out to the digital world, a Chennai based startup called ‘Laundry Project’ has attempted to re-invent the centuries-old dry cleaning industry by launching Wassup Laundry, the country's first laundry app, reports Joeanna Rebello Fernandes of TOI.

Sighting a big churn in the laundry business, R Balachandar, a 34-year-old entrepreneur launched Laundry Project in 2011, over the idea that most Indians send their daily wear, not just their premium wear, to the cleaners. And they're doing this by simplifying the oldest form in the books.

Additionally, Balachandar even showed off his bucket list of innovations that include gift vouchers, a `whiteness guarantee for a year', a home delivery system that works even when the customer is away, dhobi partnership programmes, ITI courses in laundry training and all those associated services to grow his 3.5 crore fabric cleaning business to 8 crore next year.

Once downloaded, the application launches a catalog and individuals need to specify the type of service they want that includes ordinary dry cleaning or washing, express or regular and then opt for services such as stain removers, polishing clothes, mending and so on. Along with this the users can also specify the time and place where they would like their laundry to be collected and re-washed in a neat package in five days time.
