Smartphone Prices To Go Up As Rupee Falls

Bangalore: The crash of rupee against Dollar is compelling handset manufactures to hike the price of Smartphones. The low-cost Smartphone manufactures are trying really hard to get over the situation but big shots like Apple and Blackberry are still unshaken, reports the Times of India

The disturbance in equilibrium will mainly affect the entry level and mid-level Smartphone manufacturers. Karbonn, Maxx Mobile, Lava International and Micromax have already hiked the prices by 10 to 12 percent and are believed to raise it by another 5 to 10 percent. "We are carefully monitoring the situation," said Deepak Mehrotra, CEO at Micromax. He also added that if there is another depletion of rupee the company will be bound to raise the price again. SN Rai. Co-founder and director of Lava International said that the company is compelled to increase the price by 10 percent as the parts imported from China are paid in U.S.dollars.

The top-end phones like Apple and Blackberry are firm enough even at this undervalued state of Rupee. Apple is said to calculate import duties and foreign exchange values on all its overseas models as they quote the price of a product only once. The newly launched models come with a higher price tag and companies have many ways to hide it.

CEO of ‘The mobile Store’ Himanshu Chakrawarti, said that there have been a 3 to 4 percent hike in the price of selected models by manufactures including Sony, Samsung, Nokia and HTC.
