Outlook.com Replaces Hotmail

Bangalore: Within 24 hours after the release of Outlook.com by the Redmond tech giant, 1 million users were already using the webmail service. It now seems like a good judgment on part of Microsoft to replace hotmail with Outlook.com.

The new email service called Outlook.com is cleaner, fresher and simple to user and has an interface akin to Windows 8 which was released last year and so far it has been well received by the users who are flocking in by the bundles.

Hotmail, the web based email service was launched in 1996 and bought by Microsoft in 1997. At the time, Hotmail was only rivaled by AOL mail but what was once new innovative and exciting, became stagnant and dull by the early 2000’s and with Google’s launch of Gmail, Hotmail became outdated and people started shifting to newer mail services.

Today Microsoft, has lost most of its email users to Gmail, and is trying to revive its legacy as the email web service providers with its newest launch Outlook.com. The webmail looks great with a blue overlay that can be customized as per the user’s discretion, it is well integrated with Skydrive and you can link your social network accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Flickr.

The incorporation of social networks in Outlook.com allows its users to tweet their friends from the webmail and import the contacts from the social networking sites as well.

The sign in feature is the same as it was in hotmail and you can login using the same email address and it is also quite simple to sign-up and start over. Outlook.com has had a great start so far but we are yet to see how it will compete against Gmail and other webmail.
