Kim Dotcom Claims To Own Login Patent Used By Twitter And Google

Bangalore: Kim Dotcom, creator of the MegaUpload file-sharing site, reportedly claims to own the patent for two-step verification which provides extra safety to its account holders, a password technology currently used by Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Twitter, Dropbox and others, reports The Guardian.

The two-factor authentication includes the step of one time use password sent to the users mobile phones. Every time the user logs in to his account, the user’s mobile number which is saved in the account would receive the coded message to access the account. It becomes necessary for the user to know the standard password and have the mobile device corresponding to the login.

Dotcom apparently filed his patent on 1998. However, the report claims that telecommunications companies such as Ericsson and Nokia had filed their patents in 1994 which beat Dotcom's allegation. If the reports are true Dotcom would have no claim to the technology.

However, Kim Dotcom says he will allow the companies to use his technology for free but in return he wants them to contribute to his multimillion-dollar defense fund.
