JLR Developing 'Self-Learning Intelligent' Car

BANGALORE: Tata group’s flagship Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is developing cars that will offer a completely personalised driving experience and help prevent accidents by reducing driver distraction.

Using the latest machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, JLR’s proposed car will offer an array of services to the driver, owing to a new learning algorithm that recognizes who the driver is, learns their preferences and driving style, and adopts this as soon as it detects the driver (via the smartphone they carry in their pocket).

The software uses a range of variables including your calendar, the time of day, traffic conditions and the weather to predict driver behavior and take over many of the daily driving “chores”, allowing the driver to focus on the road ahead.

“The aim of our self-learning technology is to minimize driver distraction, which will help reduce the risk of accidents,” said Wolfgang Epple, director, research and technology, JLR.

Jaguar is not following in the footsteps of Google, which has been testing a driverless car for some time now. That is a different technology altogether.

Jaguar’s intelligent car will also review the driver’s schedule for the day and intelligently pre-set the navigation.
