Is Xiaomi Silently Sending User Data To Remote Servers?

BANGALORE: With technological advancements, nothing remains personal anymore. The Chinese brand Xiaomi recently flooded the Indian market with its economically priced Smartphones, which were sold out within minutes on Flipkart.

With the brand quickly gaining popularity, Xiaomi handsets are in talks again.

This time however, for a concerned reason of leaking data to remote servers. The latest charges come from the security software and solutions company F-Secure, which tested Xiaomi's Redmi 1S phone; reports The Times of India.

The testing was done without configuring the Mi Cloud that stores user data.  F-Secure just inserted a SIM card into the phone and connected it to Wi-Fi, GPS, added contacts, made calls, and sent messages.  It turned out that the contact number, messages received, and other details were automatically being forwarded to the remote server.

Xiaomi in response to this query responded that the data is securely fetched when you use and activate Xiaomi mobile devices for the first time, the mobile user identification information, mobile device unique identification, and the location information of your device will be sent to Xiaomi. This in turn, helps in the updates of the system or software provided by the company or in recovery of factory settings as well.

Xiaomi also verified that personal data of the users are not transferred anywhere without the consent of the customers, and only starts the upload process if Mi Cloud is turned on.

With these findings, users are beginning to be concerned about the privacy of their data that is being fed into Smartphones every minute, leaving them in a dilemma over the Smartphone use.
