Bangalore: In an initiative to provide internet access to the two-third of world population who are not yet online, Facebook along with Ericsson, MediaTek, Nokia, Opera, Qualcomm and Samsung have joined hands to launch Internet.org. The main aim of this campaign includes developing joint projects, sharing knowledge, and mobilizing industry and governments to bring the world online.

Making internet access affordable, efficient use of data and helping businesses drive access are also the expected outcome of the project. The success of the Open Compute Project, an industry-wide initiative that has lowered the costs of cloud computing by making hardware designs more efficient and innovative has highly influenced the founders.

The companies will research on reducing data usage by improving the efficiency of apps built and how they can assist business drive internet access to get people online. They also aim at developing cheaper and affordable data connectivity. Manufacturing of low priced Smartphones and ideas about partnering to provide wide internet access will also be included in the project.
