Intel, Google Unveils Next-Gen of Chromebooks

BANGALORE: The latest line of Chromebooks announced by Google recently, will start selling in the market this May. Runs on Intel powered microprocessors, these Chromebooks would consume less battery power. Major computer companies like Lenovo, Acer, Dell, Asus, and Toshiba will be shipping the Chromebooks that would sell for 300 to 400 dollars.

People prefer Chrombooks over Windows-powered machines and Apples’ Mac computers; this shows that Google’s new lineup will be a competition for Microsoft and Apple PCs. Many PC makers including Intel that once collaborated with Microsoft and helped make Windows popular are now embracing Chromebooks because of the decline of PC sales as smartphones and tablets have become more popular.

Intel, Microsoft’s long time partner and probably the most important partner, now makes chips for 20 different Chromebook designs. “Intel has grown to become the No. 1 microprocessor in Chrome systems,” said Navin Shenoy, the vice president and general manager of Intel Mobile Client Platforms Group. “We’ve been working on five generations of Chrome and after Google; Intel is the largest contributor to the Chromium OS. Intel chips are the first and only to support 64-bit Chrome OS. This deep history and investment combined with our stellar Bay Trail and Haswell SoCs mean Intel can offer the best performing devices at every price point in the Chrome category. When people are shopping for Chrome devices, they should look for Intel Inside,” reports TOI.

In the latest version of the Chromebook, Google has come up with new ways to keep its users entertained without internet access. On its announcement, it talked about the introduction of Play Movies that will allow the users of Chrome OS to watch TV shows and movies that are available on Google Play when they are online and offline. Ceaser Sengupta, the vice president of product management at Google also spoke about Google Now support that will be provided to the Chrome OS users in the coming days.

Chromebooks are becoming increasingly popular nowadays and are being used in about 10,000 schools because of its low costs and free software support.
