Bangalore: Indian Government has finally ended its long lasting dispute with the Canadian Smartphone maker BlackBerry, following an agreement which permits the security agencies to monitor email attachments and chat messages send over the company’s popular BBM messenger.

According to a document obtained by the Times Of India, the Department of Telecommunications said, "Baring a few minor points for improvement of viewers, the lawful interception system for BlackBerry Services is ready for use."

However, the security agencies will not be granted the permission to access emails send through BlackBerry’s corporate email service. The demand for this was reportedly denied and agencies will however be provided with the identities of the personals using this service.

According to a BlackBerry spokeperson, "The lawful access capability now available to BlackBerry's carrier partners meets the standard required by the Government of India for all consumer messaging services offered in the Indian marketplace. We also wish to underscore, once again, that this enablement of lawful access does not extend to BlackBerry Enterprise Server."

The access to highly encrypted emails send through BlackBerry’s enterprise server was always a demand from the government.    

BlackBerry has demonstrated the interception facilities to government officials last month, following which an agreement will be signed by the government to acquire the monitoring infrastructure. Adding to this BlackBerry will also train up to five officials at its Ontario facility to handle the technical architecture, operation and maintenance of the monitoring facility.
