India Ranks 112th Globally in Terms of Internet Speed

Bangalore: India is heading towards having the third largest Internet users in the world in 2013, but the internet speed in our country is still very poor. The average internet connection speed in India was 1Mbps in the first quarter of 2012. According to a report from Akamai Technologies the country has registered an increase in average speed by 16% but it still ranks 112th globally, which is the same as last year’s. The study stated that Internet connectivity in India is poor and has a lot of room for improvement so that it can match the fast speeds offered in other countries like Japan, US and South Korea.

India’s internet lagged far behind other Asia Pacific countries like South Korea (15.7Mbps) and Japan (10.9). The highest internet speed in the country stood at 6.9Mbps which is far behind global leader Hong Kong's 49.3Mbps. Only 1.2% of connections in India have the new standard of broadband speed which is 4Mbps.

The global average internet speed has increase 14% over the last quarter and 25% over the same period last year. The report also says that the average global internet connection speed in the Jan-March quarter of 2012 stood at 2.6Mbps and the average peak internet connection speed was 13.5Mbps. Asian countries led the growth charts in internet speeds.
