India Overtakes Japan To Become Third Largest Internet User Country In The World

Bangalore: India has overtaken Japan to be the third country with highest Internet users, right after U.S. and China, says a report published by comScore, a global digital measurement and analytics firm. The report stated that over 73.9 million users are currently using internet facility in India and these internet users are significantly younger than the users from other emerging economies.

According to the comScore report, there has been 31 percent increase in the internet users over March 2012 with only PC and lap-top based internet usage taken into account. By including mobile-based internet users, India stands at 164.81million as of March 31, 2013, with seven out of eight users accessing internet from their mobiles; says the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).

The comScore however, puts mobile-based internet traffic at just 14 percent of the total.

Further analysis states that three-fourth of India’s online population is under 35 years of age in which men under 35 and women between 35 and 44 are heavy internet users. But the overall percentage of women internet users is less than 40 percent of total internet users in India.

While 23 percent of time is spent on e-mail, another quarter percentage of the time will be spent on social media on daily basis, says comScore report. When it comes to unique visitors, Google takes the first place, followed by Facebook, Yahoo, Microsoft and Wikimedia.

But Facebook beats all when it comes to the net users spending most of their time on this social networking platform. Linkedin and Twitter are also the next most popular social sites to be used and 90 percent of the total searches are carried out through Google Search Engine.

The other emerging websites in terms of popularity among Indian users are Indian Railways website among the travel websites, Yahoo for its news and many other online domestic retail stores.

China is said to have the world’s largest internet presence, outnumbering Indians by a ratio of 5:1 while the U.S accounts for just 13 percent in terms of locus of online dominance.
