Greatest Tech Hoaxes Of All Time

BANGALORE: Playing a prank on someone is a great pastime. Everyone loves the April fool’s day on the first of April, where a simple prank turns out to be a great hoax, affecting millions if done with much thought. This whole idea of playing a prank or a hoax isn’t a modern day affair, it has existed through centuries.

Even the best of minds that we read about have been the initiators of huge pranks or hoax. Now hoax is a deliberate action of humorous and malicious deception. Well let us take a look at some of the biggest hoaxes in the Tech world.

The Mechanical Turk: People, who love chess, hate it when they are beaten by a regular person. They have a bond with the game due to its royalty but more importantly the amount of energy that is put to think about not just one move but five moves ahead. So back in the 18th century a Hungarian inventor, Wolfgang Von Kempelen, unveiled his mechanical Turk that he said can reason, think and beat all those who came to play the sacred game of chess.

This hoax though didn’t last for long. A subsequent owner revealed the truth, where like any other stage trick, there was a man seated inside the box away from audience view. But 200 years later IBM, created Deep Blue, a computer program that can actually do just this, beat any human player.
