Google Brings In $8 Million With PSY's Gangnam Style
Bangalore: PSY’s Gangnam Style, the pop sensational video that swept the world last year has made millions on YouTube alone. Google’s Chief business officer Nikesh Arora said, “It (Gangnam Style) generated over $8 million in online advertising deals,”
Oppa ‘Gangnam Style’ is already the most watched video on YouTube. The video went viral and broke the billionth mark in the last quarter of 2012 and as of Wednesday, it was viewed more than 1.2 billion times.
Google allows creators to monetize popular YouTube videos by placing advertisements before the video you want to watch. For mega hit videos like Gangnam Style, this practice can be lucrative: the $8 million in earnings reported by Google means the video is generating about 65 cents in revenue per click.
PSY’s popular Gangnam step was recognized in the west when Ellen DeGeneres invited the Korean Pop star to her show to teach Britney Spears the Gangnam step and when Ellen told Britney that she has to remove her high-heeled shoes to do the dance step, PSY protested that the point was to ‘to dress classy, and dance cheesy.’ The episode went on to become immensely popular and from there on celebrities all over the world started doing the Gangnam step, Jon bon Jovi, Hedi Klum, Madonna, Barack Obama and many more.
The popular video has earned its share and PSY has become an international star with the most watched video in YouTube and the most popular dance step only to come behind MJ’s moonwalk.
