Forget Legal Targets, NSA Spies on Ordinary Web Users

BANGALORE: America’s secret surveillance programs seem to be a magnet to media houses, as new lights are shed into the snooping of ordinary people’s privacy rather than legal targets under FISA. The whistle blower Edward Snowden an NSA contractor who released information on the surveillance program has revealed that 90 percent of information collected under the spying programs is of ordinary people.

Under the provision given by FISA, America can spy on legal targets and non-American governments, but the agency has piles of data that are insignificant and deemed irrelevant. Out of the surveyed group of people, American citizens are the most spied upon.

The NSA has two sub programs called PRISM and Upstream Rules which collect information form all internet and telecommunication devices. Information is collected largely from internet giant companies like Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo. The information comprised of love messages, sexual liaisons, and texts between friends and families. They also collected over 160000 emails and instant messages.

The Obama Administration has not addressed about this issue at all even though there was a huge bilateral problem with German over the spying of the chancellor. Due to which bilateral relationship has been on a down ward scale.

The only considerably valuable information begot was of a secret nuclear project, information on an ally doing double dealings, befell of military powers and external snooping on American computer network.

The NSA has the authority to spy but this is believed to being out of hand as people all around the world are not happy with America’s surveillance programs. No doubt, this surveillance has prevented certain planned attacks and has disrupted those attacks but prying into ordinary people’s privacy is unacceptable.

With continued practice of this unacceptable prying and snooping by the surveillance project of NSA under the American government will only harm the countries hopes having peaceful relationships with foreign countries. India, Germany and Brazil have been victims of this program, which resulted in shaky relationships. How many more relationships is the government willing to sacrifice before realizing the harm in this project?

Much information has not been published due to scare of ongoing investigation by the government. The surveillance files only highlight the policy dilemma and also the collateral harm that hopefully will catch the attention of the Obama administration.
