Facebook To Buy Titan Aerospace, Aims At Well Connected World


BANGALORE: Facebook is apparently on buying spree, after $19 billion WhatsApp acquisition, now the world’s largest social network is rumored to be buying Titan Aerospace, which makes solar-powered drones, to set up its attempt to give internet access to remote corner of the world. The acquisition could fit in the Zuckerberg’s Internet.org project which dreams of a well connected world in near future.

Facebook  can useTitan Aerospace’s technology to provide internet access to more than 5 billion people around the world who still lacks connectivity. Apparently, Internet.org will use Titan's solar-powered atmospheric satellites to act as airborne wireless access points. The Menlo Park based company Facebook is to spend up to $60million on the Texas based Titan Aerospace, as reported by Techcrunch and CNBC, which quoted anonymous sources.

According to reports, Titan's solar-powered atmospheric satellites that are still under progress can remain aloft for five years. The website of the Titan Aerospace refers a large number of users for the drones, including atmospheric and weather monitoring, disaster response and voice and data communications. Facebook’s interest in Titan might be due to last two points.
