Doug Engelbart, The Tech Genius And Inventor Of Mouse, Passes Away

Bangalore: Douglas Carl Engelbart, the inventor of computer mouse, a tech genius who contributed to the early incarnation of email, word processing programmes and the internet, has passed away following kidney failure at the age of 88.

He is best known for his work on the challenges of human and computer interaction, particularly while at his Augmentation Research Center Lab in SRI International, resulting in the invention of the computer mouse, and the development of hypertext, networked computers, and precursors to graphical user interfaces.

"The possibilities we are pursuing involve an integrated man-machine working relationship, where close, continuous interaction with a computer avails the human of radically changed information-handling and -portrayal skills," he wrote in a 1961 research proposal at SRI.

He developed the mouse in 1960s and patented in 1970. It was then a wooden shell covering two metal wheels that worked on X-Y position indicator logic for a display system.
