With the future of our technology lying on the Cloud, It’s high time for us to set foot on the cloud and explore. With this aim in mind, SiliconIndia conducted a one day Cloud Developer Conference April 28, 2012.

With two tracks- Cloud Apps and Cloud Infrastructure which threw light on topics ranging from PasS Platforms to Stream Processing on Grid and from Key Factors in Deciding Cloud Vendor to The Art of Infrastructure Elasticity, this conference was a huge success and was attended by over 350+ enthusiastic cloud developers.

Sanjiv Jha, Enterprise Architect, HCL, indicated the need to get familiar with application design patterns such as gossip protocol, eventual consistency, hinted hands off, bloom filter, staged event architecture. He further said “Cloud underlying infrastructure was built on commodity hardware. These design patterns help in accounting for unreliability of underlying infrastructure.”  He further stressed on the need to avoid vendor locking using standard API and building proper abstraction layer to minimize vendor switching cost in case needed and pointed on the need to analyze fitment of application for cloud as not all applications are fit for cloud deployment.

Speaking on ‘Developing Scalable Apps for Deploying on IaaS Cloud’, Munish Kumar Gupta, Practice Lead –Hi Performance Apps, Wipro Technologies emphasized on the need to scale out our thoughts and think horizontal and not underestimate the importance of Processes and documentation. He advised on the need to take advantage of the smart frameworks like Play Framework, Node.js coupled with actor model – Akka to build stateless, concurrent and highly scalable applications.

Dr. Ram Kordale, Director of Engineering - Cloud Computing, Yahoo, in his speech, drew many unique on-boarding tips based on the experience of customers of Yahoo’s next generation PaaS Cloud that his team had built.

Dr Srinivas Padmanabhun, Principal Research Scientist & AVP, Infosys Labs, covered key software engineering issues in on boarding enterprise applications to PaaS or BPaaS models. Specifically it highlighted API centered software thinking, Data Migration to NoSQL databases on account of CAP theorem and issues related to flexible security in cloud apps including user centric identity management.

The differences and the challenge faced in Private, Public and Hybrid Clouds and possible solutions to manage the challenges was pointed out by Giridhar L V, Head of vmUnify, MindTree.  He also briefed on the concept of IaaS services in his speech.

This event was supported by VMware, Trend Micro, Cloud Bees, CumuLogic, Tata McGraw Hill and Airtel.
