BlackBerry Messenger Goes Cross-Platform This Weekend

Bangalore: This weekend, BlackBerry users will finally get to mingle with their Android and Apple team mates via the famous BlackBerry messenger. That’s right! Blackberry is going aboard to make their popular messaging platform available for different mobile users.

On September 21 and 22, the Canadian company will release BBM app back-to-back for the two rival operating systems; Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS. It’s been no secret that the once top preferred mobile phone in the corporate world has been losing its market share to its rivals for years. Yet, BlackBerry’s decision to go cross-platform with its popular product might just give it the needed edge to survive the tough market.

“We’re committed to making the BBM experience on other platforms as fully featured as we can,” said Thorsten Heins, CEO. The app can be downloaded for free at Google Play for Android and App store for Apple. Initially, both these platforms will be provided with a core feature set. “We’ll start with messaging and groups, but we’ll add voice later on. BB10 is such a strong platform that we are confident it can become an independent messaging solution”, said Heins.

Even with the new collaborative plans, BlackBerry is still in for a tough time as the Wall Street Journal reported that the company is prepping up for staff cutbacks which will likely affect nearly 40 percent of its workforce.
