Andy Rubin Steps Down; IITian Becomes Google's New Android Chief

Bangalore: Andy Rubin who headed Google’s Android operating system for Smartphones and tablet computers has stepped down and is replaced by Sundar Pichai, an IITian who also heads Google’s Chrome division.

The company appointed Sundar Pichai as the executive keeping an eye on its Chrome web browser and applications like Google Drive and Gmail to take over Rubin’s responsibilities, hinting at how Google intends to address the rise of mobile devices.

Google CEO Larry Page said in a post on company’s official blog, "Having exceeded even the crazy ambitious goals we dreamed of for Android-and with a really strong leadership team in place-Andy's decided it's time to hand over the reins and start a new chapter at Google,"

Andy Rubin has stepped down at a time when the adoption of Android grows at a quicker pace. Even though Microsoft pushes Windows Phone and BlackBerry struggles to create a buzz with BB10, almost 69% Smartphones in the world currently run on Android, reports TOI.
