After Tumblr, Yahoo Eyes To Acquire Hulu

Bangalore: After announcing its acquisition of blogging service Tumblr for $1.1 billion, Yahoo has joined the growing list of bidders for Hulu which is owned by NewsCorp and Walt Disney, in its attempt to buy video service site Hulu.

The search giant now joins rival bidders for Hulu which include Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Peter Chernin – former News Corp president, and Guggenheim Digital Media. However it is not known as to how much the Internet Company is bidding.

According to sources, Chernin is bidding $500 million, but Reuters reports that his offer is too low as Hulu could be worth as much from $1 billion to $2 billion.

Time Warner’s bid is an equity investment as the cable operator plans to set a joint venture with other cable companies to join Hulu. From Yahoo’s side there are no comments based on the requests put forward.

As of now five bidders have emerged in competition for the 4 million user video service. But sources say that the offers so far were dependent on Hulu amending content licensing agreements, which bidders found too limiting.

Silver Lake, a private equity firm which has teamed up with William Morris Endeavour has also submitted a letter of interest, says a source who is close to the Hulu bidding.

Yahoo which is now looking at acquisitions has also beefed up its mobile and online products and content with CEO Marissa Mayer looking at the brighter side of the web’s most popular destination.
