5 Dying Technologies in Smartphones

Bangalore: If there is something in the world that evolves every day, it would be mobile technology. Mobile phones have evolved quickly from being just a medium of communication to a device that can perform almost all the functions needed by the user.

Many mobile technologies, which we once thought as “futuristic” turned out to be something of the past in a couple of months. Here is a list of such dyeing technologies in the present day Smartphones.

Infrared data association (IrDA)

After its introduction, IrDA was a standard feature only in some high end phones during the 2000s. It has a position in the history of wireless data transmission along with EDGE and Bluetooth. But later, IrDA surrendered itself to the advanced Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies. With the arrival of the latest Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies, the infrared is practically disappeared as a feature.

The limited range and speed, along with the need for perfect alignment of the infra red ports were the reasons that killed this technology. It transferred data at 2 Kbits/second when its closest one, Bluetooth had a speed of 24 Mbits/second. Adding to it, the inability to sync with other devices was also a reason for its failure.
