3 Amazing Innovations by Indian Engineering Students

BANGALORE: Innovation has always been at the core of the engineering advancements. From energy-positive homes, robots, drug delivery systems, to chips for quick medical diagnosis, special wheelchairs, and visual aids, some students in Indian engineering colleges  are driving innovations for betterment of human life.

Here, we bring you three cool innovations by Indian engineering students, as compiled by BCCL Hari Pulakkat of The Economic Times.

Energy positive house - IIT Bombay

Today, with the resources getting depleted at an alarming rate and the environment becoming uninhabitable in a way almost as dramatic as the science-fiction movies, it is expected that the number of urban middle class houses to increase from 22 million today to 91 million in 2030. So, there is an immediate need to rethink the way we design our homes.

This challenge has been taken up by Team Shunya, a collaboration of Rachana Sansad's Academy of Architecture and IIT Bombay-to build a sustainable, cost-effective, solar-powered house for the Indian middle class in urban areas.

It is the first ever team from India to have been selected to participate in the international competition on energy-efficient and affordable housing: the Solar Decathlon Europe.

The competition is quite a challenging task as the energy consumption of the house has to be reduced to the bare minimum, while still providing sufficient energy for comfortable living.

For the project, the team deploys various contemporary design concepts in their house and uses passive solar design, a technique of using solar energy without mechanical devices.

As solar arrays tilt as the sun moves, they have also integrated solar tracking in the house, which adjust to the angle of rays to receive maximum sunlight. It also uses a hybrid AC-DC network and DC devices to reduce energy use.
