Who they are:  International Business Machines Corporation or IBM, is an American multinational technology and consulting corporation. The company manufactures and markets computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure, hosting and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology.

Why they're inspiring: IBM was recently named the world's greenest company by The Daily Beast. It has turned itself into a torch bearer, helping companies measure, and then reduce, their resource consumption. IBM uses water coolant that cools a supercomputer in Zurich, and the hot water out of this process is used to heat nearby buildings.

On the social front, IBM's CEO and Chairman, Virginia Rometty is credited for getting rid of Augusta National golf club’s policy prohibiting female members.

#5 Karmio

Who they are: Karmio is an e-commerce site that promotes local businesses while benefiting global nonprofits.

Why they're inspiring: Sibté Hassan, founder of Karmio says “I’m not looking at bars or restaurants, or cruises for a deal. I’m looking at a guitar teacher or a writing teacher who runs a twelve seat classroom to teach creative writing.” And about the revenue he says “the only thing required is that from this campaign, they should be able to raise a minimum of $10.” Karmio's goal is give part of its profit to charity and also to help local businesses thrive while encouraging them to give back to the community and the world.
