Yahoo Buys Mobile Analytics Startup Flurry

BANGALORE: Yahoo, one of the biggest IT giants bought Flurry, a mobile apps analytical company. The amount it was sold for is still uncertain, but it is believed to be several million dollars. This is a huge step forward for Yahoo to extend its mobile reach. This acquisition will help Yahoo fulfill its dreams of becoming a ‘mobile first’ company as it competes with rivals Facebook and Google. Flurry creates tools that help marketers determine which of their mobile ads are better suited for iPhones or android phones. It gathers information from over 500,000 mobile apps. Flurry also does real time bidding for ad space run by algorithms.

Yahoo lost its hold on desktop display advertizing market, hence now through the acquisition of Flurry it will hope to gain entry in to phones thereby increasing and winning back its advertizing space but this time in mobiles. This is a major step towards the company’s turnaround efforts by the CEO Marissa Mayer.

They will hope to win back their once dominant arena of desktop display advertisements that they lost with the rise of Facebook and Google. It is a new start for Yahoo, but the CEO along with the rest of the team feel this is a good start towards entering the mobile market.

“With Yahoo, we will have access to more resources to speed up the delivery of great products that can help app developers build better apps, reach the right users for their apps and more importantly, make money from ads that look great and blend into the app experience,” Flurry’s CEO and founder Simon Khalaf, said in a blog post.

Flurry has helped grow the apps economy to a $100+billion industries. This acquisition is a major one as Flurry is understood to have worked with over 170 thousand developers, which gives Yahoo better exposure. The popularity of Flurry in the world of developers will give Yahoo the best advantage for growth. This gives Yahoo a strong string to their mobile bow; as they have already started developing their own apps and app inventory. This will also make Yahoo the go-to place for other mobile players to boost and develop their own app business.

This new acquisition adds on to the already known 30 acquisitions made in the mobile products either directly or indirectly. These acquisitions have been made ever since Marissa Mayer took over as CEO, who believes that the mobile product sector will revive Yahoo.
