Wal-Mart India Launches E-Commerce Website to Tap $50 Billion By 2020

BANGALORE: Wal-Mart Stores has launched an e-commerce platform in the Indian cities to woo mom-and-pop stores to fuel sales. Wal-Mart as the world's largest retailer seeks to dominate a market it estimates will be valued at $50 billion by 2020, and it is counting on its online operations to help fuel sales as it grapples with a slowdown both at home and abroad.

It has 20 wholesale outlets in India which will support its e-commerce services. They even have plans to introduce the service to the remaining 18 outlets as well, but not anytime soon.

This year April, Wal-Mart announced plans to open 50 more wholesale outlets in India and start online operations to sell to small shopkeepers, the e-commerce service will be available only to its trader members, and does not have any immediate plans to sell directly to consumers through its service.

Walmart’s Chief Executive Officer for India, Krish Iyer said, We will continue to focus only on business-to-business service, but that does not mean we will not look at it, he also mentioned that Wal-Mart's wholesale stores currently cater to consumers within a 20-km radius and the e-commerce business will help the company serve customers from within a 40-km radius of its stores.
