BANGALORE: Commercial drones are now taking up the skies in 2015. High-profile startups like 3D Robotics have raised a major $50 million in funding this year.

Top notch companies like General Electric Co. and Qualcomm Inc. are investing to boost funds for the aeronautics of commercial unmanned vehicles (UAVs). Venture capitals have already come forward in favor of the drones in 2014, reports Light Trending.  

Drones are now making their presences known and have taken their places as aerial wing of the Internet of Things (IoT). The features for the Initial applications include recording footage for movies, TV, documentaries, and data collection for agricultural and other such projects.

At present 3D robotics is the highest financed startup in the commercial drone space. It has obtained $85 million in 3 consecutive ventures funding so far. Qualcomm Inc. venture brought forward the latest $50 million round. The chipmaker has joined the 3D Robotics league and are arming it with a Snapdragon chip platform wings as the smartphone silicon enters the world of unmanned airborne vehicles (UAVs)

3D Robotics founded in 2009 reigns the hobbyist drone market, but is directing its funding towards the commercial arena. They have also established a series of open-source software for executing commands, management and tracking a number of drones.
