IITians Quitting High-Profile Jobs To Enter $48-Billion Food Sector


BANGALORE: Graduates of Indian Institute of Technology, working at high paying jobs gave it up to get into the food business, setting up individual ventures that form part of the mushrooming $48 billion food service business in India, reports Divya Sathyanarayanan of The Economic Times.

India’s Capital Delhi is a city that serves food to more than 300 people daily, where Tech Buddy found a new concept. Inspired from the satvik way of life that conforms to its rules, such as no onions or garlic, Satviko serves cuisine from India and across the world, such as Mexican, Italian and American.

In the next six months, the Satviko is planning to expand the business in Dubai, U.S. and UK using the venture capital of its two outlets that is about 35,000 daily.

A graduate of IIT Roorkee, Gupta quit his five years job and has become a chef formerly with the Taj Group and is now constantly dreaming up new dishes for the menu.

Gupta said, "While the initial investment in setting the company, its assets and hiring people is high, we are looking at becoming a Rs 100-crore chain within the next two years of operations," reports ET.

In Gurgaon, FRSH that is started by an IIT Delhi graduate Badal Goel, serves some healthy food including salad and juices for corporate clients.

"Right now, FRSH serves corporate offices in Gurgaon and later we will start the service even for metro stations, schools and apartment complexes as we are targeting high density areas," said Goel .

Recently  a graduate of IIT Bombay, Manish Goyal quit a management consulting job and founded Foodies Compass, an online platform that solves the 'what to eat?' dilemma.
