GIBBS; the Startup Which Helps Firms to Save Money and Energy

BANGALORE: In the era of technology and entrepreneurship it is difficult to stand out from the crowd and think out of the box. But Arun Shenoy and Mandar Kaprekar have managed to do so with their startup Green India Building Systems and Services (GIBBS), which helps other firms to save money and energy through geothermal technology, reports rediff.com

A medical engineering masters degree holder from Oklahoma University, Arun came to India and joined TRANE in 2008, during the job he came to know about the impact geothermal technology can make in economy as well as environment. Whereas Kaprekar returned from West Asia in order to start a venture in building system industry, since he has worked in the industry for more than 15 years. They met up in 2009 coincidently and their interest and vision were similar. Thus the company was started from a living room of an apartment in April 2010.

Shenoy stated about the development of company that, "Bootstrapping was the name of the game from 2009 through 2012. We invested our savings in the company towards research and product development. During this phase, we conducted empirical studies on ground thermal and hydro-geological data of 22 cities across India, which formed the baseline for geothermal strategies that could be applied to cooling regions like India”

GIBBS is now located in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore and Singapore and helps the building owners to reduce their operating costs by up to 60 percent through using innovations such as geothermal air-conditioning systems, hot water cogeneration and LED lighting systems. It also works with the owners in order to make energy saving projects as well.

The Co-Founder Mandar Kaprekar said that "Till date, we have generated annual savings of eight million electrical units and reduced 150 million liters of water consumption, "Currently, there are 16 geothermal projects under execution in different parts of India across building verticals like data centers, large office buildings, manufacturing facilities, hospitals, hotels, pharmacy and automotive plants. We are now working with over 400 buildings across industrial, institutional and commercial settings, to help them achieve a net zero-energy building path"
