Born in 1940, he is a German entrepreneur. The SAP cofounder donated 7 million of his shares in 1995 to found the Klaus Tschira Foundation, a nonprofit established to promote public understanding of mathematics, informatics and natural sciences. Interestingly, Tschira also has a small asteroid named after him. He retired from SAP in 1998, devoting his time to his foundation, promoting such projects as grants for single parents studying information science and economics and computer camp for vision-impaired youth.

3. Jeff Skoll, U.S.

Donations: $1.1 billion

Net worth: $3.3 billion

Born in 1965, Skoll is Canadian engineer and internet entrepreneur. He was the President of eBay. Since 1998, he has focused on philanthropy and his movie production house, Participant Media. Skoll's donates through his Skoll Foundation, which backs "social entrepreneurship" around the globe and the Skoll Global Threats Fund, which works exclusively on five major issues: climate change, water security, pandemics, nuclear proliferation and conflict in the Middle East.
