Bangalore: Neurosynaptic Communications, a firm working on urban healthcare has been shortlisted for the ‘Social Entrepreneur of the Year, 2012’ award. The company is focused on shortening the gap between rural and urban areas in the healthcare sector.

The Bangalore based firm started trying to find a high quality and affordable means to provide city-like excellent healthcare to villages back in 2005. In 2008 after carrying out various experiments with various technologies and partnerships, it came up with Remote Medical Diagnostic. Trademarked as ReMeDi it is a telemedicine and telediagnostic means which links rural health workers to doctors and specialists in urban areas. For instance, it includes an electronic stethoscope and pulse oximetre. It also provides online consultations at bandwidth of speed as low as 32 kbps.

Currently almost 13,000 units are running in rural Bihar, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and many more. This is expected to multiply in the coming years, says Sameer Sawarkar, CEO of the company.

Other firms shortlisted for the award are Udyojoni, a Delhi based organisation working on a ‘cloth for work’ approach to empower people in villages and Goonj, also from Delhi which is trying to awaken the entrepreneurial spirit among the people with problems of poverty and unawareness.
