Ridiculous Superstitions Even the "Elites" Believe in

BENGALURU: India is a country which takes pride in the fact that we still follow many of the cultural norms that were set several centuries ago. We are one of the few nations who haven’t severed their links to their glorious history. Though we are modernizing while still holding our culture and traditions as the base, the core, we forgot to do away with certain myths which were made up to convince people at the time who were unwilling to accept scientific answers. Let’s take a look at few of those myths which even well–educated follow till day.

The Unlucky Number 13:

Poor 13, of all the infinite numbers, it is considered the unluckiest. But why so? Well it turns out this was not always the case in India. In fact, up until the British invaded our nation and even now in certain places, 13 is an auspicious number. It got its ‘unlucky’ tag from two Christian events. One was the last supper, where Judas, the apostle who betrayed Jesus, was the last of the 13 to occupy his place at the supper. The other belief is that it was on Friday the 13th that Eve deceived Adam into eating the apple from the Garden of Wisdom. These beliefs where brought in by the missionaries who in the process of spreading Christianity also spread the myths involved with it.
