Mercedes-Benz Launches Fifth S Series Sibling, the S 400 for a Tag of 1.31 Crore

BENGALURU: The presence of a “three-pointed star” on Indian roads is not new. As the Asian tiger leaps forward to grasp a prominent global stand, luxury auto-makers are leaving no stone unturned to make sure that they participate and benefit from this catch. The three-pointed star manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz despite its long, established presence in the country shows no intention of losing the pitch to its competitors. To feed the growing hunger of the Indian luxury automobile market, Mercedes-Benz promised a new offering each month, for the year 2016.

Extending its uber-luxurious S series lineup, Mercedes-Benz launched the fifth sibling, the S 400 for Indian roads. Priced at 1.31 crore, ex-showroom Delhi, the S 400 has the smallest capacity engine among the S series. However, the S 400 will sport identical interiors as its elder siblings, caressing the occupants in same luxury the lineup is known for. Array of equipments on the car include 7-colour ambient lighting, air suspension, four-zone automatic climate control, a 1,540 watt, 24-speaker Burmester sound systems, rain-sensing panoramic sunroof, seat memory and massaging function and parking assist. On the passenger safety front, the S 400 comes armed with eight airbags, electronic stability program, brake assist, hill-start assist and Mercedes' PreSafe safety technology along with attention assist. The S 400 is offered with highly customizable options to suit a buyer’s taste inside the cabin including material and equipment.

The all new S 400 is targeted for customers looking for an affordable S series lineup or those looking for a petrol engine and don’t need a massive V8 or V12 under the hood. The car will be powered by a 3.0 liter V6 engine that produces an impressive 329 BHP and 480 Nm of torque. The power delivery to the rear wheels is handled by a 7-speed GTronic transmission unit which is common to S 500. In line with the “Make in India” campaign, the maker has announced that the S 400 will be manufactured at its Chakan facility, located in Pune.

Although the S series needs not much introduction, it will be safe to inform that the lineup is focused on the luxury of occupants on the back seat, being chauffeured around. The S 400 is pitted to go heads on against other two German uber-luxury sedans, the BMW 7-series and the Audi A8L.

In an interview given to The Financial Express, Roland Folger, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, “Mercedes-Benz believes in introducing the latest products and variants in the market at regular intervals, to keep customer interest and curiosity intact in the brand. This strategy we firmly believe has contributed to our unmatched success in India. With the launch of the S 400, we further extend the S-Class model range and also bolster our strong presence in the prestigious S-Class segment. The S 400 symbolizes benchmark craftsmanship, affluence and grandeur. No other car stands for the Mercedes-Benz brand promise more than the S-Class.”
