BENGALURU: Goa, the sun-soaked state with long beaches and lush vegetation, is home to more than 420 species of birds. A lot of birds in Goa are endangered or migrants.  The state welcomes birdwatchers, with a variety of unique species and migrants from many places. As part of an initiative to encourage bird watching, Goa recently hosted a bird festival.

There are several prime spots in Goa that are home to a variety of birds- especially during the starting of winter days. Named after the famous Indian ornithologist, Dr Salim Ali Bird sanctuary houses a number of species like terek sandpipers, temminck’s stint?and the purple heron that flock to nest in the swampy mangroves. The Carambolim Lake is also home to numerous aquatic as well as herbivorous birds, including the purple swamphen, the northern pintail, and the oriental darter.

Birds like the Indian peafowl, the orange-headed thrush, the greenish warbler, and the purple sunbird lives mostly in the Saligo bird sanctuary.  The Bhagwan Mahavir wildlife sanctuary houses some of the rarest of bird species like the Ceylon frogmouth, Malabar trogon and the white-bellied woodpecker.

Even though the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the smallest sanctuaries, an astonishing variety ?of birds like the Malabar grey hornbull, the hair-crested drongo and blue-faced malkoha lives here.
