2 Indian Designers Showcase Collections At UN Event


UNITED NATIONS: Two Indian designers have showcased their collections during a fashion show here at the inaugural ‘Women Empowering Women’ event. Anjali Sharma, owner and designer of ‘French Curve’, and Varsha Mahendra creator of ‘Jus’ Blouses’ showcased their clothing collections along with women designers from Ethiopia, India, Mongolia, Palestine, Papua New Guinea and Peru for the opening of the London-New York Festival organized by the International Trade Center (ITC), a joint agency of the World Trade Organization and the United Nations.

The work of women artisans was interwoven with winning designs by students from the London College of Fashion and Parsons The New School for Design and displayed during the fashion show at the ‘Women Empowering Women’ luncheon. The event at the headquarters of the world body was a high-profile gathering of “women saluting women’s economic empowerment and female excellence.”

Sharma’s studio works extensively with Indian artisans and promotes ancient traditional hand crafted intricacy on fabric surface.

Her labels ‘ANJALISHARMA’ and ‘French Curve’ retail to some of the top stores in India and online in the UK. She aims to help better the Indian society through basic norms of charity, and said the fashion event is “a beautiful opportunity for us to dream bigger and to expand in all areas close to our heart.” Mahendra, a designer from NIFT, works for empowerment of women artisans to both keeping the craft alive and also help artisans to lead an empowered life by pursuing the crafts.

The event showcased how the drive and energy of fashion can contribute to women’s economic empowerment and how sustainable development can be both modern and dynamic. It was chaired by ITC Executive Director Arancha Gonzalez and co-chaired by UN Women Executive Director Phumzile

The LDNY Festival is a month-long event, developed to bring the best of New York to London and London to New York, to encourage more tourism, business between the cities, especially in new digital and creative industries and supports a foundation to enable young people from less privileged backgrounds to join these industries in the future.
