India's Memorable Moments at 2016 Rio Olympic Games

BENGALURU: With the curtains coming down on the sixteen days extravaganza at Rio, both athletes and fans are looking back at what happened during the Olympic Games. While athletes are setting their goals for the future, fans are reminiscing some of the best performances put-in by individuals. Here, we take a look at some performances by Indian athletes that brought happiness to the people of the country during the course of Rio Olympics.

When PV Sindhu and Sakshi Malik won the silver and bronze medals in their respective games, it was proud moments for all Indians. Sindhu brought home the silver after a spirited performance against Spanish athlete Carolina Marin while Sakshi claimed bronze by winning three back-to-back games coming from behind. Both the young athletes would look to boost their performances in the next Olympics scheduled to happen at Tokyo in 2020.

Some other memorable performances by Indian athletes that made the nation proud came from the likes of Kidambi Srikanth, Dipa Karmakar, Abhinav Bindra and others. Srikanth, went down in the quarter finals of the men’s singles badminton competition to Lin Dan of China after an inspiring performance. Dipa, the first female gymnast missed the bronze medal by 0.15 points but gained the appreciation of one and all for her near perfect execution of the Produnova vault. Abhinav Bindra, India’s lone individual gold medallist at the Olympics till date missed out on adding another Olympic medal by a mere 0.5 points. Lalita Babar, who managed to qualify for the finals of the 3000 meter steeplechase broke a 32 year old jinx during the Rio Games. She became only the second woman after PT Usha in 1984 to make it to the finals of a track and field event.

Though India managed only two medals at the Games, the effort put-in for the Olympics will surely inspire athletes to further enhance their skills. With proper infrastructure put in-place and full time support provided, the existing and emerging players would undoubtedly be successful in bringing more Olympic glory to the land of billions.
