Deepika Kumari Equals the World Record at the Archery World Cup

BENGALURU: Deepika Kumari, former World No.1 and winner of two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games scored 686/720 in the 72-arrow ranking round to equal the feat of London Olympics gold-medalist Ki Bo Bae of Korea, reports Indian Express.

In 2012, Deepika Kumari showcased similar attributes and form in the run up to the London Olympics which took her to the world number 1 ranking. Unfortunately, she couldn’t convert that form in a performance that would give her the gold medal at the London Olympics. In the same year, Bae recorded two gold medals at the London Olympics in the individual and team competition. Now, just hundred days before the Rio Olympics, Deepika again showed great skills at the Archery World Cup and we can hope that the archer can bounce back by learning from her previous experiences.

While many might argue the fact that Koreans sent a team of juniors and cadets, making the competition for Deepika comparatively less, but she still had to be at her best to equal the world record set by an Olympics gold medalist. According to the coaches, Deepika’s performances are not a surprise as she’s been training well in the camps with consistent shooting and has been reportedly outclassing the men archers as well.

In the past, the Indian Archer has won a silver medal in the world championship and also has a consistency in performing well at the World Cups too which can be considered as a good source of optimism for Rio Olympics. She won her fourth silver in 2015 and finished runner-up thrice from 2011 to 2013.
