A Glittering Closing Ceremony Brings Rio Olympics to an End

BENGALURU: Olympians and fans from all around the world together bid goodbye to the Rio Olympics which came to a sparkling end. This year’s Olympics, the first to be held in South America was a spectacular one, with fans treated to some brilliant performances by athletes like Michael Phelps, Usain Bolt and others. The Indian contingent, which was able to garner two medals in the Olympics, also made the country proud by putting in some spirited performances. Athletes like PV Sindhu, Sakshi Bhagat, Dipa Karmakar, Aditi Ashok and many more showed that there is no dearth of talent in the country and if nurtured properly more Olympic winners would emerge from the land of billions.

The closing ceremony which was held at the iconic Maracana stadium saw performers dressed in colourful feathers shake a leg to samba. Apart from that, Martinho da Vila, whose tunes make their way into many popular telenovelas mesmerized all those present at the ceremony with his song ‘Carinhoso’ or ‘Affectionate’. Original footage of Alberto Santos Dumont, recognized as the inventor of the airplane by people of Brazil was also featured at the ceremony. Unlike the opening ceremony which focused largely on Rio, the closing ceremony showcased performances from all around the country.

Thomas Bach, the president of International Olympic Committee was quoted as saying, “These were marvelous Olympic Games in the ‘marvelous city.’” The ceremony came to an end with the passing of the Olympic flag to Yuriko Koike, the Governor of Tokyo where the next Olympics are supposed to happen in 2020. With Tokyo being one of the richest, recognizable and cosmopolitan cities around the world, we can surely expect another memorable Olympics just like in Rio.
