Alappuzha beach also known as Alleppey is a weekend destination for the people of Kerala and has a huge system of inland waterways that it is famously referred to as the Venice of the East. At one point of time it was one of the busiest ports at the Malabar Coast and the canals were used at that time. But still it is one of the hubs for the coir industries and prawn farming. The town has its annual Snake Boat Race which very popular amongst the people of Kerala and various tourists also specially schedule their trip around that time. The race takes place in the town of Aranmula around the second Saturday of August.

Kottayam, another town in Alappuzha district has a number of lovely churches to offer to its visitors. Kerala being a state with a number of Christians, various famous churches of India are in the state.
