World's 50 Largest Organizations Contributes 73 Percent of the Total Greenhouse Gases

Bangalore: According to the recent report released by Global 500 Climate Change Report 2013, fifty of the world’s 500 leading listed conglomerate emitted 3.6 billion metric tons, or 73 percent of the total greenhouse gases (GHG). These emitters mainly function in energy, materials and utilities divisions all over the world, reports TNN.

Over the last four years, the companies' emission had increased by 1.65 percent to 2.54 billion metric tonnes, as opposed to popular perception that the intervening global recession had lowered carbon footprints of large organizations.

The report came out at a time when experts from across the globe are providing finishing touches to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) to strengthen the scientific case for climate change action in the years to come.

Malcolm Preston, global lead, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), said, "It raises questions for some organisations about whether they are focused on sustaining growth in the long term, or just doing enough to recover growth until the next issue arises. With the IPCC report only weeks away, corporate emissions are still rising. Either business action increases, or the risk is regulation overtakes them," reports TNN.

The CDP report may reach out to developing economies like India, Brazil and Argentina since emission of GHG drastically leads to global warming and it is believed that it will look for extensive action for reducing emission for developed countries, including the U.S., Japan and EU nations.
