Witness the Silent Side of Diwali through these Villages in Erode

BENGALURU: Diwali or the festival of lights marks the beginning of good over evil, victory over darkness and hope over despair in our country. One of the highlights of the festival is the lighting of diyas.  While, bursting crackers adds flavors to the festival as a whole, some villages in the country have decided to forego their holy celebration for the sake of good deeds.

According to Times of India, the people closely encircling the eight villages of Vellode bird sanctuary refrain themselves from bursting crackers during Diwali. The villages were established in 1996 in 80 hectares of land with 750 families inhabiting it. Talking about the reason for resisting the celebration, the villagers believe that the loud noise may scare away thousands of migratory birds that arrive at the sanctuary during the September-December season.

A 73-year old villager named Chinnasamy also stated that since the initial years of the sanctuary being established, the villages jointly decided to stop bursting the crackers and it has been 17 years since this custom has been religiously followed. He also commented that “Villagers near the sanctuary are extremely concerned about the sanctuary and the birds that migrate to the sanctuary. Until two years ago, even sparklers were not used in the village. But now some children use them. However, crackers are a big no-no.”

Birds across continents including Australasia migrate during the season, building their nests, laying eggs and living with their young ones.
