Ugly Truth: India Witnesses Highest Number of Bankruptcy Suicides in 2013


BANGALORE: Suicide which is often considered as a mysterious act is mostly committed by those people who are mentally and emotionally disturbed.  It is a social and very serious issue of most the countries in the world. In India, every year on an average, more than 1, 00,000 people commit suicides. Out of which, 2,678, case of suicides on account of bankruptcy are reported that is seven suicides a day, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau.

The rate of such suicides shot up to 13.6 percent against 2,357 in 2012. The number of suicides increases from 120,488 to 134,799. The share of suicides out of financial bankruptcy to overall suicides still remained stable that is two out of every 100 suicides were on account of financial distress, the same as the last year count.

Among the Indian states, Andhra Pradesh (1,044) reported the highest number of such cases followed by Maharashtra (619). These two states accounted for about 60 percent of bankruptcy-related deaths in 2013.

 Highest number of such cases is found in Andhra Pradesh because of the fact that the region has been in a state of unrest on account of political disorder over the creation of the new state of Seemandhra.

Coming to cases in cities, there is a high rate of 388 suicides due to bankruptcy. Financial capital of India, Mumbai, with 39 accounted for the highest number of such cases followed by Vijayawada (33) and Hyderabad (29).
