UP's Khaki Men behind 80 Pct Illegal Arrests in the Country

Bangalore: Uttar Pradesh has a disturbing trend of policemen who are often considered to be responsible for upholding the rule of law, being the ones breaking the rules, working for/with the criminals and violating human rights.

Despite the claims made by the Akhilesh Yadav government of bringing reforms in the police department, many policemen have been found to be involved in most of the crimes like murder, train robbery and bribery, etc.

As such, the state has today received the undesirable tag of recording 80 percent of illegal detentions and arrests in the country which turns out as the highest number countrywide, reported Gangadhar S Patil for DNA.

In over two years, almost 3,668 people were illegally arrested all throughout the country. Out of which, 3,236 were reported exclusively from Uttar Pradesh. The remaining 432 such cases were from the rest of the 27 states.

589 cases of illegal arrests and 1,331 illegal detentions were reported from this state itself in the 2012-2013.

S.R. Daraupri, a retired IG of UP Police said "The police are by and large rotten because a large number of the officers are corrupt and therefore, play into the hands of corrupt politicians easily," reported India Today.
